We worked very hard on creating a museum experience people wouldn’t forget. At the beginning of the unit, we started by organizing the classroom into a representation of the world; each group representing a continent. We even labelled the floor to show where the different oceans are, as well as, drawing a line down the middle of the room to show the equator. Each group then undertook their own inquiry to explore a country from their chosen continent. Throughout the unit, students visited a range of museums in Beijing, to develop an understanding of what makes a successful museum. This all resulted in the students creating their own museum for people to learn about different countries from around the world. I asked the students to draw a map of the world and cover it with as much information as they could think of. We did this at the start and end of the unit; it was astounding how much they had learned in 6 weeks! I think the fact the classroom was a mini representation of the world really helped the students to get a sense of the different countries locations across the world and gave them a better understand how physical geography can influence the culture of a country.
